Album Types

There are a number of album suppliers popping up around the online space and many use the generic term “wedding album” or “photo album” for a variety of styles of photo albums.

Today we are going to educate you in there various styles of albums and terminology. Just be mindful that not all are of the same quality, same features or print quality, just make sure you are comparing oranges and oranges or if oranges and apples you are educated in the finer details.

The general rule applies if one product appears much cheaper, its definitely not of the same quality or something is different with the more expensive option.

Let’s jump into the different types of photo albums.

Fine Art or Heirloom Album

Designed to last generations, heirloom albums are handcrafted with premium materials such as linen, leather or velvet covers. Crafted so the photos are printed directly on the page. A luxury, museum-quality album printed on fine art paper using archival inks. The pages have a matte, tactile finish and exceptional colour depth.

Flushmount Album

A flushmount album consists of a hard cover with thick, sturdy pages. “Flushmount” refers to the method used to attach the print to the page. The image is mounted as a single sheet flush with the page and its edges.

Matt Album

With matted albums, prints are mounted to each side of a page with a matte laid on top of them to frame the printed photo. The matt style album takes more work to assemble as it requires printing each photo, mounting it and lining up the matte precisely to align together.

Dry Mount Album

A traditional format where printed photographs are mounted onto thick, board-like pages by hand. We don’t offer this style of album because we feel the fine art style of album is a more contemporary and quality album.

Self-Adhesive Album

Features peel-back sticky pages where photos can be placed directly, then covered with a protective overlay. Off the shelf product with no personalisation option for the cover, however, a DIY friendly option.

Slip-In Album

Includes pre-cut slots for inserting individual photo prints. Simple, practical and a generic album for those that don’t require personalisation.

Polaroid Album

Polaroid cameras have made a come back over the last few years and therefore making the polaroid style album popular again. Typically come with a generic title such as “our wedding” or “memories”. Made to hold Polaroid or Instax prints with photo corners or stick in. More often used as a guest book or keepsake for candid wedding day moments.

Magazine-Style Album

Album Anatomy

Page

A single printed side within your album. Two pages viewed together make one spread.

Spread

A two-page layout that opens flat across the centre fold — ideal for panoramic images or editorial-style designs.

Layflat Binding

A premium binding technique allowing pages to open completely flat, with no gutter or image loss.

Gutter

The central fold where left and right pages meet. In layflat albums, this is almost seamless.

End Papers

The first and last pages that connect the inside cover to the main pages. These can be plain or printed with a design or colour.

Page Thickness

Refers to how thick or rigid each page feels. For example, the fine art albums feature thick, board-mounted pages for a luxurious, sturdy feel. Whereas our editorial magazines and photo books have photo paper pages.

Binding & Craftsmanship

Perfect Binding (PUR)

In the case of our Wedding Magazines and Premium Photo Books, the pages are glued together along the spine for a strong hold — this method is industry standard by bookbinders for magazines.

Saddle Stitch Binding

A simple binding technique using staples along the spine, typically for thinner booklets.

Layflat Binding

(See above) A high-end binding method allowing spreads to open seamlesly for full-bleed page designs. Pages are bound together and enclosed in a hard outer shell (hardcover) — ideal for long-lasting keepsakes such as our heirloom style and fine art albums.

Cover Design & Finishing

Embossing

A raised impression of your text or design, giving your cover a beautiful tactile finish.

Debossing

The inverse of embossing — a pressed-in design that sits below the surface of the cover. This is the style we use to personalise the album cover.

Hot Stamping

A metallic foil (commonly gold or silver — but you can choose from our range of 14 colours) is heat-pressed into the artwork (text or design) for a polished, luxurious touch.

Blind Embossing

A design pressed into the cover without any foil or ink — for a minimalist, tonal look that feels ultra-sophisticated.

We don’t offer photo retouching because we are working with professional photographers images that are legally protected by copyright laws. Please contact your photographer if you require any edits made to your images prior to ordering your album.
